Mingshan Hall

Mingshan Hall is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

Mingshan Hall is located in Shangwan Village, Yangwan, Dongshan, Wuxian County, Jiangsu Province. It is an exquisitely built and magnificent private residence with outstanding architectural artistry. Constructed in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, its main structure lies to the east and includes a flower hall, main hall, principal building, side corridors, wing rooms, and more. To the west are a gate wall, side rooms, guest hall, Buddhist tower, and garden. The various buildings are separated by courtyards, gateways, and partition walls.

The hall has three bays, is 12.05 meters wide, and 12.32 meters deep with eight columns and ten frames, forming an almost square layout. The building features high ceilings and is paved with large square bricks laid diagonally. Its foundation is raised three stone steps above ground level, with all step-edge stones made of bluestone. The brick-carved gate tower mimics wooden carvings in stone, showcasing intricate craftsmanship, an ingenious layout, and vivid artistic expression — truly a masterpiece of Ming Dynasty folk carving art.

The entire structure combines painted woodwork with carved brickwork, making it a rare site for study by architects and sculptors alike. It was designated as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in 1962.
