Central District is a major commercial hub of Taichung City. Back in the day, the establishment of Taichung Railway Station here spurred the prosperity of the surrounding area. Although the city’s transportation center has gradually shifted westward, the historical legacy left behind has made Central District one of Taichung’s key tourist hotspots, so why not take your family for a weekend getaway to Sanxia?

Liuchuan is one of the four important rivers in downtown Taichung. After revitalization, it became the city’s first sustainable eco-engineering-developed scenic riverside. The daytime scenery is pleasant, while the nightscape dazzles with lights, making it a newly popular spot in Taichung. It’s not only a great place for Instagram-worthy photos, but also a “living river” that combines aesthetic appeal with water storage and irrigation functions.

Next to the Green River near Taichung Railway Station stands a building made of red brick tiles. It was purchased by the “Sunrise” cake team—who rose to fame with their Taiwanese pineapple cakes—and is the former site of Miyahara Eye Clinic. The building’s original red brick walls and old archway have been fully preserved, transformed into a nostalgic-style red-brick, wooden-roofed arcade. Inside, the décor mimics a vintage high-ceiling library, creating a magical space where old and new eras blend.

Within the Second Market, age-old food stalls like the braised pork rice, mabo tofu, mushroom meatball soup, black tea, and noodle stands have decades of history. Just pick any stall, sit down, and you’ll be served dishes refined over the years and tasted by countless foodies. Here, you’ll find many regulars satisfying their cravings. While strolling and snacking, don’t forget to look up at the market’s historic roof or the staircases on street corners.

Located in Central District, the Liuchuan was originally called “Shinsei Stream.” It was renamed in 1912 and was a highlight of the “Little Kyoto” plan for Taichung during the Japanese colonial period. The small Shinsei Bridge, now known as Zhongshan Green Bridge, was once one of the eight major night views of Taichung.
