In the autumn of 2016, as typhoons continued to hit, Typhoon Megi (No. 17) brought powerful winds and heavy rain. The scaffolding on the high-rise building of the long-abandoned old Jinsha Department Store near Taichung Railway Station collapsed, resulting in a shocking scene, injuries to two civilians, and vehicle damage. This also drew attention to the long-vacant Jinsha Department Store, which has since undergone renovation and transformation to become the Le Méridien Lefong Hotel—now a highlight of accommodation in central Taichung and attracting significant attention.

The Taichung City Government actively promoted the “Central District Industrial Regeneration – Realizing Greater Taichung” plan, which received a response from the international-grade Lefong Hotel Management Group. In November 2014, after approval from the Taichung City Urban Development Bureau for land use modification, an investment of NT$8 billion was made to establish the “Taichung Le Méridien Lefong Hotel” on the former site of Jinsha Department Store. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in March 2015, with completion expected in 2017, trial operations in late 2017, and official opening on January 1, 2018. The hotel plans to have approximately 235 rooms, along with premium dining services and meeting spaces, adding further appeal to the overall revitalization of central Taichung. At the groundbreaking press conference, Mayor Lin Chia-lung stated that the Lefong Group’s involvement would be a leading force in the regeneration of the central district, successfully attracting commercial agglomeration effects and projected to create over 500 job opportunities, invigorating and regenerating central Taichung.

The Lefong Hotel Management Group originally started as the Songzhe Accounting Firm before branching into hotel management. In 2003, it launched the Royal Seasons Hotel brand and subsequently collaborated with international hotel groups. Between 2013 and 2014, it also introduced the Space Capsule Hostel brand, offering accommodation tailored for backpackers. In early 2014, it partnered with Le Méridien, an art-focused brand under the U.S.-based Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, moving toward higher-end hotel operations and services. The Taichung Le Méridien Lefong Hotel was established, and the Lefong Hotel Management Group was officially registered in spring 2014.

In the future, central Taichung is expected to see a growing number of tourist attractions and accommodation facilities, along with diverse and convenient transportation options, making its tourism potential highly promising.
