Nanjing Guizishan Stone Pillar Forest

The Nanjing Guizishan Stone Pillar Forest covers an area of approximately 13.3 hectares and is located northeast of Luhe County. Each pillar has a diameter of about 40–60 centimeters and a height of 20–30 meters. The cross-sections are either regular or irregular hexagons, pentagons, and other shapes. The pillars are straight, upright, densely and neatly arranged, making for an extremely spectacular sight and a great destination for geological tourism.

The Guabu Mountain Scenic Area National Geopark is located in Guabu Orchard. The park features geological landscapes such as volcanic groups, stone pillar forests, and Yuhua stone layers as its main attractions, supplemented by natural ecology and cultural landscapes, forming a large-scale comprehensive geopark. The stone pillar forest in the Guabu Mountain Scenic Area is one of the main attractions of the national geopark, primarily composed of basalt stone pillars. The pillars are arranged in a fan-like formation from top to bottom, reaching heights of 60–70 meters, creating a spectacular view that forms diverse landscapes such as the “Tower of the Lion” and the “Peacock Spreading Its Tail.”

Domestic geologists and experts from New Zealand, Australia, and other countries jointly investigated and confirmed that the “Luhe Stone Pillar Forest” consists of hexagonal and pentagonal “columnar joints” formed when basalt erupted from a volcano one million years ago, cooled upon reaching the ground. These formations are taller, more spectacular, and more majestic than the renowned stone pillar forest in Yellowstone National Park in the United States.

Visitors can also observe rare volcanic geological landforms and volcanic relics in the Jiangnan region here; enjoy multimedia science education on volcanic earthquakes, explore volcanic geology; and participate in fruit picking and tasting, interactive rural activities, and folk art tours.

Transit Routes: From Nanjing, take the Yu-Liu Line to Liuhe South Station, then transfer to Bus 621 to Guabu Community Station, and walk to Guabu Mountain Geopark.

Self-Driving Route: Nanjing – Erqiao Expressway – Ningluo Expressway toward G40 – Shanghai–Xi’an Expressway exit at Guabu – Yeliu Line – Guabu Mountain Geopark.
