Among the most desired tourist spots in Taiwan for foreigners, it’s not the culturally rich National Palace Museum nor the towering Taipei 101, but the night markets filled with diverse entertainment, food, and shopping. Night markets can be described as the showcase of Taiwanese street food and the most representative aspect of local, everyday culture. To promote Taiwan’s night market tourism this year, the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has specially organized the “2010 Special Night Market Selection Campaign.” The public can simply vote online for their favorite distinctive night market, with a chance to win a share of a one million NT prize pool — all for free!

Since the launch of the “2010 Special Night Market Selection Campaign,” the top 10 night markets that have made it to the finals are: Keelung Miaokou Night Market, Shilin Tourist Night Market, Huaxi Street Tourist Night Market, Ningxia Night Market, Fengjia Tourist Night Market, Chiayi Cultural Road Night Market, Tainan Garden Night Market, Kaohsiung Liuhe Night Market, Fengshan Zhonghua Street Tourist Night Market, and Luodong Night Market. Through online public voting and on-site evaluation by judges, five special awards will be given out: “Most Environmentally Friendly,” “Most Visitor-Friendly,” “Most Charming,” “Best for Strolling,” and “Most Delicious,” aiming to attract more domestic and international tourists.
The “2010 Special Night Market Selection Campaign” will run for one month. Starting today, members of the public who vote online will have a chance to win a travel package worth 25,000 NT, carefully prepared by the Tourism Bureau. In addition, there will be a wide range of other attractive prizes. The Tourism Bureau has also arranged for a professional judging panel to conduct mystery shopper evaluations and on-site visits to shortlisted night markets, further ensuring the credibility of the rankings.

In addition to the online event, the Tourism Bureau will also distribute 10,000 night market food vouchers to foreign visitors in Taiwan this year, giving them an easy way to enjoy Taiwan’s night market snacks. This effort not only helps raise the profile of Taiwan’s night markets but also allows for a deeper experience of the cultural charm of night market tourism.
