From April 3 to April 4, 2016, Peking University's Mountaineering Association held the 10th National University Outdoor Skills Competition, titled the “Bear Grylls Survival Academy Cup.” The competition featured four major events: rock climbing (bouldering), comprehensive rope techniques, orienteering, and outdoor skills. A total of 25 teams from universities across China participated in the event.
At 8:00 a.m. on April 3, the opening ceremony was held at the rock wall of Peking University’s First Gymnasium, home to the Mountaineering Association. The ceremony kicked off with a rock climbing performance. Amidst the audience’s cheers, two climbers swiftly scaled the wall and unfurled banners reading “Friends Gather at Boya, Boya Embraces All Directions, Together We Face the Storms” and “Storms Gather at the Turning Point, A Decade of Watching Over, A Decade of Friendship.” This marked the official start of the 10th National University Outdoor Skills Competition.
Since 2004, the National University Outdoor Skills Competition has been successfully held for 10 editions, with its scale and influence growing year by year, gradually establishing itself as a major event in university outdoor sports nationwide. In addition to the outdoor skills competition, the University Students’ Outdoor Development Forum was held concurrently on the evening of April 3 in the North Annex Hall of Peking University Library. Guests attending the forum included Huang Nubo, Vice Chairman of the China Mountaineering Association, Wang Yongfeng, Captain of the Chinese Mountaineering Team, and Gaoning, Deputy Consul General of the Consulate General of France in Chengdu. At the forum, Huang Nubo announced that Peking University's Mountaineering Association would attempt to climb Mount Everest in 2018. It is reported that this will be the association’s first-ever attempt on Everest.
