To seize business opportunities during the mainland's May Day holiday, 33 vendors from Kaohsiung’s Liuhe Night Market have set up stalls in Beijing. Through food sales and cultural exchange performances, they aim to bring people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait closer together. Some vendors said that the number of mainland tourists visiting Liuhe Night Market has recently dropped noticeably, so taking the opportunity to promote their offerings in Beijing during the holiday is a good chance.
The event is called “Kaohsiung Special Week – Liuhe Night Market in Fengtai,” jointly organized by the Beijing Taiwanese Investment Service Center and the Fengtai District Business Federation of Beijing. It runs for five days (from April 29 to May 3) at Wanfeng Snack City in Fengtai District. The event is divided into four parts: special snack sales, cultural exchange performances, interactive experience exchanges, and tours.
There are 33 food stalls offering items such as sausage wrapped in sticky rice, nougat, oyster omelets, indigenous barbecue, takoyaki, banana durian pastries, potted ice cream, conch skewers, salt and pepper squid, and spicy squid. Local arts and culture groups in Fengtai will perform traditional Beijing opera and skills near the stalls, while chefs specializing in snacks from both sides of the Strait will also demonstrate how to make them on-site.
A vendor who asked not to be named told the Central News Agency that planning to set up temporary stalls in Beijing after the Lunar New Year had started before the holiday. Coupled with the fact that the night market business isn’t doing so well lately, there has indeed been a noticeable drop in the number of mainland tourists visiting Liuhe Night Market. Taking this opportunity to promote their offerings in Beijing during the holiday is considered a good move.
