Hailar National Forest Park (formerly Hailar West Mountain Scenic Area) is located on the West Mountain of Hailar District, Hulunbuir City. It is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and the only national forest park in China dominated by Scots pine. The park is divided into the South Garden, North Garden, West Garden, and a reserve resource area. The South Garden contains cultural relics from the microlithic period of the northern grasslands dating back several thousand years, making it one of four such sites in northern China. On the southern side of Celebrity Peak, there are three remnants of military fortifications built by the Japanese invaders in 1934, known at the time as the Shasong Mountain Position. These were part of 15 fortified zones constructed by the Japanese army in Northeast China and were destroyed by the Soviet Red Army in 1945 during the War of Resistance Against Japan. In recent years, the park has successively built a Folk Culture Restaurant, Hailar Exhibition Hall, Botanical Garden, and Zoo in the South Garden, and developed scenic spots on Celebrity Peak such as the Tree King, Sentinel Pine, Wounded Tree, Sweet Spring Pine, Twin Pine, and Root Slope. Standing atop Celebrity Peak and overlooking the vast sea of forests while listening to the rustling of pine trees, one can truly appreciate the stunning natural beauty of China’s northern frontier.
The North Mountain Site of the Hailar Fortress, a former Japanese military stronghold during the invasion of China, is located beneath a sacred mound in the northern part of downtown Hailar. The Hailar Fortress, also known as the Hailar Fortified Region, was one of the two largest among the 15 military installations established by the Kwantung Army of Japan along China’s northeastern border in preparation for an invasion of the Soviet Union (the other being the Dongning Fortress in Heilongjiang Province). The terrain around Hailar rises sharply to the west, north, and east, with the Aobao Mountain in the north serving as the highest point in the urban area. The fortress formed a tight defensive system, using resistance hubs as main defensive positions and auxiliary positions on high ground between these hubs for support. The Hailar Fortress primarily consisted of the Aobao Mountain and North Mountain positions, comprising both above-ground and interconnected underground sections, with the subterranean facilities extending 12 to 17 meters below the surface and constructed through underground excavation.
The hill behind the gas station is Aobao Mountain, which was also one of the Japanese army's underground fortifications during that time. However, it remains undeveloped, and inexperienced individuals should not enter without permission. The site of the Hailar Mass Grave is now located within the territory of Chen Barga Banner. It was a large pit dug by the Japanese to bury Chinese laborers who died of starvation, exhaustion, disease, or were killed while constructing the Hailar Fortress. …
