Located about 30 kilometers south of Baotou city proper, Zhaojun Island faces the Yellow River to the south and looks across to Zhaojun’s Tomb in Yimeng on the opposite bank. It is surrounded by tributaries of the Yellow River on its other three sides, hence the name “Zhaojun Island.” Stretching 4 kilometers from east to west and 2.5 kilometers from north to south, the island is home to 25 species of xerophytic and desert plants, as well as around 25 species of birds. The island boasts a beautiful natural environment. Upon ascending the observation tower, visitors can gaze southward at the vast expanse of the Yellow River and northward at dense reed marshes. Boating through the area offers a taste of the water town scenery. The island features a statue of Zhaojun holding a pipa, as well as unique “three-leaf trees” for visitors to admire.
