Genghis Khan Cultural Square
Genghis Khan Cultural Square, located 13 kilometers southeast of Xilinhot City in Xilin Gol League, at the southern foot of Zhuolan Mountain, covers an area of seven square kilometers. The square backs onto the Xilin River Reservoir, looks south toward the Huitengxile Grassland, and is flanked by scenic areas. To the east are the famous Jiudianwan Xilitala 2A-level Scenic Area, Xilitala Migratory Bird Watching Area, and Xilitala Resort, while to the right are the Educated Youth Obo and the grassland wonder of Pingding Mountain. The Xisang Railway and National Highway 207 run through the eastern and western sides of the square, respectively.
The Xilin Gol Grassland is not only one of the birthplaces of the Mongolian people but also the place from which Genghis Khan and his descendants ventured into the Central Plains and the wider world. During the process of unifying the Mongolian tribes, Genghis Khan fought the famous Battle of Urukhui in the Ulagai River basin of Dong Ujimqin Banner, broke through the Jin Dynasty’s defenses for the first time at Wushabao in West Sunid Banner, marking the beginning of the campaign against the Jin, and won the pivotal Battle of Yehuling in the Taibus Banner area and to the south, annihilating 300,000 elite troops of the Jin Dynasty in one fell swoop... As a result, many legends about Genghis Khan are still passed down across the vast Xilin Gol Grassland.
Kublai Khan, Genghis Khan’s grandson, inherited the throne on the Xilin Gol Grassland, established the Great Yuan Empire, and built the renowned Yuan Shangdu there; the subsequent eight emperors of the Yuan Dynasty were also enthroned at Yuan Shangdu. Therefore, starting with Emperor Shizu Kublai Khan, the emperors of the Yuan Dynasty truly became natives of the Xilin Gol Grassland.
