Winter Lashan Cliff Carvings

The Winter Lashan Cliff Carvings are a cultural relic protection unit of Heping County.

The Winter Lashan Cliff Carvings are located on the rock face halfway up Winter Lashan Mountain, at the border between Cenjiang Village and Zhongdong Village in Shangling Town, Heping County. They were discovered in 1982. The carvings are 1.2 meters high and 0.8 meters wide, inscribed in vertical clerical script using intaglio technique. The carving depth is 0.01 meters, and the characters are about 0.08 meters in size. The text reads: “Ren Daoyuan, Commander of Huizhou Guard, was ordered to campaign against the rebels at Cen and eliminate them. He then garrisoned troops to manage the aftermath for four years, bringing stability to the region. Recorded on this auspicious day in early spring, the year Xinmao of the 19th year of the Wanli reign.” During the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty, Chi Zhongrong, leader of a peasant rebellion along the Guangdong-Jiangxi border, declared himself the “Golden Dragon Overlord” at Qutan in Jiulian Mountain. The Ming court dispatched Wang Yangming to lead troops from four provinces to suppress the rebellion, which was eventually quelled. However, remnants led by Li Jian and Jiang Yuezhao regrouped at Cengang in Shangling and launched another uprising. Despite multiple military campaigns, government forces suffered repeated defeats over a period of more than 50 years without success. In 1586, during the 14th year of the Wanli reign, another suppression campaign was launched, resulting in the defeat of Li Jian. Subsequently, Ren Daoyuan, Commander of Huizhou Guard, engraved this commemorative cliff inscription alongside the road south of Cenjiang Village on Winter Lashan Mountain to record his achievements.

In 1986, the Heping County People’s Government designated the site as a cultural relic protection unit.
