Gao'an Building

Gao'an Building is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

Located in Zhangdong Village, Heshui Town, Heping County, Gao'an Building was originally built during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. Shortly after its construction, it was burned down by bandits. It was later rebuilt in the 27th year of the Daoguang reign (1847), with the new structure being taller and more magnificent than the original. Gao'an Building is a square-shaped enclosed residence, covering an area of 1,100 square meters, and features a three-courtyard, three-wing layout, with watchtowers built at each of its four corners. The main building faces west and is situated eastward. The main gate of Gao'an Building is inlaid with a bluestone plaque, on which the three characters “儒林第” (Confucian Scholars’ Residence) are carved in relief. Two pairs of flagpole stands stand in front of the gate, inscribed with: “Erected by Huang Weinan, Candidate for Directly-Controlled Prefecture Sub-Prefect, together with his son, Gongsheng Bao Hui. Winter Month, Auspicious Day, 27th Year of the Reign of Emperor Daoguang.” Above the main gate of Gao'an Building stands a three-story, pavilion-style brick memorial archway, which is distinctive in design.
