Yan Family Memorial Hall

The Yan Family Memorial Hall is located at the foot of Nanshan Park in Lianping County. It shares a site with the county museum. The entire complex covers an area of 2,000 m², with a built-up area of 1,000 m² and an exhibition hall area of 200 m².

The hall primarily focuses on preserving and promoting the historical materials of the “Thirty-Six-Character Official Admonition,” and showcases the integrity, people-oriented governance, and patriotic spirit of three generations of the Yan family from Lianping during the Qing Dynasty. The highlight of the site is the “Thirty-Six-Character Official Admonition.” This text represents the essence of the Yan family’s culture of integrity. The full text of the “Thirty-Six-Character Official Admonition” reads: “Officials do not fear my severity but my integrity; the people do not respect my ability but my fairness. Fairness ensures the people will not dare to be disrespectful; integrity ensures officials will not dare to deceive. Fairness brings clarity, and integrity brings authority.” This concise yet profound text, rich in philosophy and powerful in its moral warning, became a motto for many “upright officials” throughout history, and was strongly endorsed by former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and other national leaders.
