Former Residence of Huang Zhiyou

The former residence of Huang Zhiyou is located in Tianxin Village, Beijiaotian, Reshui Town, Heping County.

Huang Zhiyou was born in March 1913 and joined the Communist Party of China at Sun Yat-sen University in May 1938. He once served as a member of the Heping County Anti-Japanese Support Committee and as the Propaganda Minister of the Heping County Committee of the CPC. In the later stages of the War of Resistance against Japan, he taught at Siliang Middle School, Zijin Middle School, and Yangshan Middle School, using these positions to engage in underground party activities. In the spring of 1945, he participated in the “Youth Cadre Training Class of the East River Column Political Department.” In the same year, he worked as a reporter for the newspaper "Forward." From August 1945 to November 1947, he taught at Hong Kong’s Xiangdao Middle School, where he was responsible for student party organization work. At the same time, he also served as the proofreader and supervisor of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPC’s official newspaper, "Political Report." From June to December 1948, he was the Chairman of the Administrative Committee of Lianhe County. In January 1949, he became the Deputy County Magistrate of Lianhe County People’s Government, in June the Deputy County Magistrate and Deputy Secretary of the Heping County Committee of the CPC, and in August the County Party Secretary and County Magistrate. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he held positions such as Head of the Culture and Education Group at the Southern Daily and Vice Principal of the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Students’ Supplementary School. He retired in October 1980 (enjoying the treatment of a department-level official) and passed away in Heping in May 2002.

This former residence was originally built in 1910, covering an area of over 230 square meters. It is a brick, tile, wood, and earthen structure and is currently unoccupied. In 1996, his fourth son, Huang Shike, renovated the ancestral hall known as “Guangyu Mansion.” Although unoccupied, the building is relatively well-preserved.

In January 2012, it was included in the Heping County Inventory of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites.
