Former Residence of Lin Jingqiu

The former residence of Lin Jingqiu is located in Shuixi Village, Guzhai Town, Heping County.

Lin Jingqiu, also known as Lin Jingqiu, was born in 1914 in Shuixi Village, Guzhai Town, Heping County. In his early years, he worked as an elementary school teacher and principal. He participated in the establishment of the Guzai People’s Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Brigade and served as its deputy commander. In July 1939, he joined the Communist Party of China, assisted in founding Siliuan Middle School, and served as Secretary of the HEDong District Committee of the CPC and as a district officer of the Third District Office of Heping County. In March 1940, he was hired as a teacher at Siliuan Middle School. While teaching, he also engaged in underground party activities, contributing significantly to the establishment and development of the school’s Party organization. Starting in March 1941, he successively served as the Propaganda Minister and — Minister of the HEDong County Committee of the CPC, and as principal of Dongshui Primary School. In 1943, he was transferred to the Dongjiang Column. In 1944, he became the head of the Propaganda Section and Party Branch Secretary of the Political Department of the Daya Bay People’s Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Brigade. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, he advanced into Jiulian Mountain with the Third Detachment of the Dongjiang Column. After the Third Detachment withdrew northward, he was ordered to stay behind in Jiulian Mountain to continue the struggle. He held positions such as commander of the Sixth Regiment of the Second Detachment of the East River Column of the Guangdong–Jiangxi–Hunan Border Column, and chairman of the HEDong Administrative Committee. After June 1949, he served as secretary of the Heping County Committee of the CPC and concurrently as county magistrate, as well as secretary of the Heyuan County Committee of the CPC and concurrently as county magistrate. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he held positions including deputy commander of the Huizhou Garrison Command and director of the office of the Guangdong Provincial Party School. After retirement (enjoying the treatment of a department-level official), he devoted himself to the arts, focusing on painting, and earned widespread acclaim in southern China. He passed away in Guangzhou in September 1998 at the age of 85.

This former residence was originally built during the Qing Dynasty. It faces west and is situated along an east–west axis, with a total width of 37 meters and a depth of 38 meters, covering an area of approximately 1,400 square meters. The layout consists of three courtyards, two wings, and one front courtyard. The structure is made of earth, wood, brick, and tile, featuring a flush gable roof, with the wing rooms having a hip-and-gable roof, grey tile roofing, and clay-tiled ridges formed by stacking tiles. The walls bear load through purlins resting on wooden beams, with cobblestone foundations, mud-brick walls, and lime-plastered surfaces. The front features a row of three doors, with the central door being a brick-arched entrance. The interior includes upper, middle, and lower halls connected by courtyards, with corridors and side rooms on both sides. Each hall has passageways leading to the wing rooms. In front of the wing rooms is a rectangular courtyard, and there is a spacious front yard in front of the main gate, enclosed by a wall with a dragon boat-style ridge in the center. In 1948, during the Nationalist encirclement of the Shuixi revolutionary base area, the upper and middle halls and the northern wing rooms were burned down. Currently, the gate tower, entrance hall, and southern wing rooms remain well preserved.

In January 2012, it was included in the Heping County Inventory of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites.
