After the Japanese occupation of Liuzhou, he engaged in anti-Japanese guerrilla warfare in northern Guangxi. After the victory of the War of Resistance, he assisted Li Jiarén (who later became Vice Governor after the liberation) in Guangzhou. In the summer of 1946, he followed Li Jiarén to Hong Kong and served as a special commissioner of the New Territories District Party Committee of Hong Kong. The following spring, he collaborated with fellow CCP member Huang Kefu and others to publish the magazine “Heping Gonglun” (Peace Forum), calling for opposition to the civil war, advocating democracy, and criticizing the crimes of the Kuomintang rulers in the county. In March 1948, he was ordered to return from Hong Kong to the Jiulian Mountain guerrilla zone to participate in leadership work. In July of the same year, he was appointed Political Commissar of the Sixth Regiment of the Second Detachment of the Guangdong-Gan Border Area and Secretary of the He-Dong Sub-Working Committee of the CCP.
