Former Residence of Zeng Yuan

The former residence of Zeng Yuan is a cultural relic protection unit of Heping County.

The former residence of Zeng Yuan is located in Etang Village, Daba Town, Heping County.

Zeng Yuan (1917–2008), originally named Zeng Jinghu, was a native of Daba Town, Heping County. He joined the Communist Party of China at Sun Yat-sen University in October 1938. In his early years, he served as the Secretary of the Heping County Committee of the CPC, Political Commissar of the Sixth and Seventh Detachments of the Dongjiang Column, Political Commissar of the Escort Brigade and Secretary of the Huidong County Committee, as well as Political Commissar of the Daya Bay People's Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Corps. In September 1945, he was appointed Political Commissar of the Third Detachment of the Dongjiang Column, leading his troops into the Jiulian Mountains to establish a guerrilla base. In June 1946, he retreated northward with the Dongjiang Column to Yantai, Shandong. In September 1949, he moved south and served as Political Commissar of the Third and Fourth Regiments of the Liangguang Column, and later as Political Commissar of the Independent Division. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he held various positions including First Secretary of the Shunde County Committee, Political Commissar of the Gaolei Military Sub-district, Director of the Political Department of the Yuexi Military District, Second Secretary of the Zhanjiang Municipal Committee of the CPC, and Secretary of the Maoming Municipal Committee of the CPC as well as Mayor. During the Cultural Revolution, he suffered unfair treatment. In June 1972, he returned to work as Secretary of the Maoming Municipal Committee of the CPC and Director of the Revolutionary Committee. In February 1979, he was transferred to serve as Deputy Party Secretary of Jinan University. He retired in May 1984 and passed away in Guangzhou in April 2008.

The residence was originally built during the Republican era, facing southeast with a northwest orientation. It has a total width of 44 meters and a depth of 45 meters, covering an area of 1,980 square meters. It features a hall-and-wing style layout with three courtyards, two wings, and a front courtyard. The structure is made of earth, wood, brick, and tile, with a gable and hip roof. The wings have flush gable roofs, grey tiled roofing, and ridges formed by stacking tiles. The walls are load-bearing with purlins, featuring blue brick foundations, earthen brick walls, a lime-plastered surface, and blue brick flooring inside.

In January 2010, it was designated as a key cultural relic protection unit by the Heping County Government.
