Khreshchatyk Street

Khreshchatyk Street is the central street of Kyiv and the busiest thoroughfare in the city. The name "Khreshchatyk" means "cross-shaped" in Russian. The street was restored to its pre-war appearance after World War II. It runs directly through Independence Square, home to Ukraine's premier square. In 1998 and 2001, the street and square underwent renovations that preserved their original style while giving them a modern touch. To make full use of the prime location, a large-scale, modern underground shopping mall was developed beneath the street and Independence Square. Lined with trees and bustling shops on both sides, this street is considered the commercial golden district of Kyiv. It is closed to traffic on weekends and holidays. On Ukraine’s Independence Day, military parades and weapon displays are held here. Highlights: Legend has it that the area was originally an open space at the edge of a forest, crisscrossed by rivers—hence the name. Today, the tree-lined street is full of vibrant commerce and transforms into a pedestrian zone on weekends, embodying the spirit of a modern metropolis.
