Independence Square in Kyiv

Located in the open square area of downtown Kyiv, Independence Square is one of the city’s most important public spaces and has become a key destination for leisure and recreation. Since its establishment during the Kievan Rus era, the square has gone through multiple name changes. Its present name was adopted to commemorate Ukraine’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Independence Square is traversed by Khreshchatyk Street, and several metro lines intersect here, making it a vital transportation hub in Kyiv. At the center of the square stands Kyiv’s iconic memorial column, which rises prominently, topped with the figure of the Slavic Mother Goddess. Some of Kyiv’s best hotels are also located around the square. The site features seven buildings arranged in a graceful arc, notable for their unified and distinctive architectural style. Throughout the square, fountains and sculptures vividly reflect Ukrainian history, culture, and traditions—such as the sculpture of the Three Brothers, who are said to be the founders of ancient Kyiv. Additionally, there is a Peace Column with a continuously rotating globe at its top, encircled by doves of peace, symbolizing global harmony.
