European Square

European Square is located at the northern end of Khreshchatyk Street in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, just 500 meters from St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery. It is a large triangular square that is very popular among the locals.

Over the past two hundred years, the square has changed its name eight times. It was originally called Horse Market Square. Later, after the opening of Kyiv’s first theater, it was renamed Theater Square. Starting in 1851, it was named European Square, then changed to Tsar Square in 1869 in honor of Tsar Alexander II. During the Soviet era, it was called the Third International Square, during World War II it was named Hitler Square, and later Stalin Square. In 1961, it was renamed Lenin Komsomol Square, and only after the dissolution of the Soviet Union did it revert back to European Square. The different names reflect the culture and various purposes of the square in different eras, and through them one can understand the history.
