Introduction City Hall was designed by John Bakewell Jr. and Arthur Brown Jr. in 1915. It embodies the then-popular Beaux-Arts architectural style. The Baroque-style dome is modeled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, making it a grand, classical, and symmetrical masterpiece. The sculptures above the entrance pediment are the work of French artists. “Wealth of California,” “Commerce,” and “Navigation” reflect grand ideals. City Hall also serves as the political heart of San Francisco and a grand stage for politicians. Across from City Hall is the War Memorial Opera House, built in 1932, where the San Francisco Opera and Ballet perform. Nearby Hayes Valley is located on Hayes Street, between Franklin Street and Laguna Street, and is home to stylish cafes, fashion boutiques, and specialty shops.
