California Palace of the Legion of Honor
Introduction This art museum was founded in 1924 by sugar magnate Adolph Spreckels and his wife in honor of Californians who died in World War I. The Legion of Honor is a replica of the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris. Its permanent collection spans artworks from 2500 BC to the present, featuring masterpieces by various renowned artists.
Exhibits include ceramics, tapestries, books, prints, and drawings. One of the highlights is a collection of 70 sculptures by Rodin. A replica of Rodin’s “The Thinker” greets visitors in a prominent spot within the museum’s colonnaded courtyard.
