The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located at 82nd Street on Fifth Avenue. It is a vast treasure trove, spanning four city blocks and housing over 3,000,000 works of art. To really get the most out of your visit, you’ll likely need several half-days. So, it’s best to come up with a plan before stepping into its grand halls. The museum displays artworks from ancient civilizations to contemporary pieces, featuring hundreds of masterpieces renowned worldwide. In addition to paintings and sculptures, the museum also exhibits tapestries, musical instruments, costumes, and decorative arts. The five major galleries are: European Paintings, American Paintings, Primitive Art, Medieval Art, and Egyptian Art. Among the four newly built wings, one is dedicated to Primitive Art and is called the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing. The New Arms and Armor Galleries were reopened in late 1991. The museum also boasts numerous garden courtyards with soaring glass ceilings, perfect for a relaxing break. Of course, you can also pick up meaningful souvenirs at the museum shop.
