Highlights

The main features of this park-like design are a stone wall made up of over 30,000 granite blocks weighing a total of more than 6,000 tons, and life-sized, lifelike bronze statues. The entire Roosevelt Memorial is divided into four sections by stone walls, representing the four terms of Roosevelt’s presidency: the first stone chamber features bas-reliefs depicting Roosevelt’s inauguration. The stone wall also bears various handprints and facial expressions that correspond one-to-one with carvings on the central stone pillar in the room, conveying the fear and helplessness of people during the Great Depression; the second stone chamber continues the theme of the “Roosevelt New Deal” and the establishment of the social welfare system from the first chamber, and also houses masterpieces by renowned sculptors George Segal and Robert Graham; the third stone chamber centers on a presidential seated statue twice life-size, with Roosevelt cloaked and wearing a resolute expression; the fourth stone chamber highlights Eleanor Roosevelt, the president’s most important partner.
