Introduction The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest federal court in the country. It is located on East Capitol Street, with its entire facade supported by 16 marble columns. On either side of the stone steps leading to the main west entrance are two sculptures carved by James Earle Fraser: "Contemplation of Justice" and "Guardian of Law." The bronze doors leading to the courtroom are each inlaid with four relief panels depicting major events in the evolution of Western legal history. At the end of the corridor is an oak door that opens into the Supreme Court Chamber. The Court is presided over by one Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices; according to the Constitution, Congress may change the number of Associate Justices. Transportation
