National Zoo
Introduction
The National Zoo was established in 1889 and is home to approximately 500 species and 2,700 animals, including cheetahs, zebras, camels, elephants, fallow deer, Tibetan antelopes, brown pelicans, kangaroos, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, gorillas, and of course lions, tigers, and bears, among many others. In addition, the National Zoo also houses giant pandas. The animals live in large, open enclosures that simulate their natural habitats. At the zoo’s Children’s Farm, kids can get up close to domesticated animals, with ducks, chickens, sheep, cows, donkeys, and more roaming freely throughout the area. Transportation
