Suicide Cliff

Introduction

Suicide Cliff (Suicide Cliff) is situated in the northern part of Saipan. Its shoreline is filled with numerous memorials of varying sizes built by the Japanese to commemorate their war dead. During World War II, after the U.S. forces successfully landed and the Japanese defense of the island collapsed, the “loyal to the Emperor” soldiers, regardless of age or gender, jumped off the 250-meter-high cliff into the sea to avoid capture by the Americans, leaving behind a field of corpses. Today, like Banzai Cliff, it attracts a large number of Japanese visitors each year for memorial purposes.
