Gwangju World Cup Stadium

The Gwangju World Cup Stadium, with a capacity of 44,000, was one of the venues for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan. Its canopy, covering 60% of the seats, symbolizes Gwangju’s Mudeungsan Mountain, and the Y-shaped columns supporting the roof represent the city’s traditional chariot battle folk game. Especially, the two opposing canopies resemble the two sides in the game. Moreover, the stadium was designed with emergency evacuation in mind, allowing all spectators to safely exit within 5–10 minutes. The facility also houses an exhibition hall, media center, archives, and sports facilities.

Transportation: Take bus No. 36 from in front of Gwangju Station and get off at the World Cup Stadium; the journey takes about 40 minutes. By taxi, it takes about 25 minutes. Take bus No. 36 from in front of Gwangju Intercity Bus Terminal and get off at the World Cup Stadium; the ride takes around 15 minutes. By taxi, it takes about 10 minutes. At the entrance of Gwangju Airport, take bus No. 21 or 36 to the World Cup Stadium; the trip takes approximately 30 minutes (with a 15-minute interval). By taxi, it takes about 20 minutes.
