Asia-Pacific’s Best Tourism City Vigorously Taps into the Korean Market

According to the latest Mastercard report, Taipei ranked 10th among the best tourism cities in the Asia-Pacific region for the first time in 2016. Taipei has become one of the main drivers of growth in the Asia-Pacific tourism market, and the number of mutual visits between Taiwan and South Korea from January to April this year has reached 660,000, with hopes of approaching the 2 million mark. Recognizing the high growth potential of the Korean market, the Taipei City Government’s Department of Information and Tourism not only participated in the 2017 Hana Tour International Travel Show at the KINTEX (Korea International Exhibition Center) in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, from June 8 to 11, but also attended the 32nd Taiwan-Korea Tourism Exchange Conference, and hosted a Universiade Tourism Night in Daegu City to actively promote travel related to the Universiade.

For this participation in the Hana Tour International Travel Show, Taipei introduced the city through its culture, food, nature, and festivals. Not only were Korean-language tourist maps, MRT maps, and themed brochures readily available, but a “Sightseeing Bus Monopoly” game was also created based on the newly launched 2017 Taipei Double-Decker Sightseeing Bus. This allows travelers to easily explore Taipei without worrying about getting lost, offering a comprehensive and unique Taipei travel experience. The game involves rolling dice to visit key sightseeing bus stops such as Beimen, Ximen Red House, Taipei 101, Huashan 1914 Creative Park, and the National Palace Museum... Participants have the chance to win delicious pastries freshly delivered from Taipei, such as Guo Yuan Yi’s pineapple cakes and St. Mary’s bite-sized cookies, as well as special edition round chicken lanterns from the Taipei Lantern Festival, tattoo stickers, souvenir keychains, and themed postcards. During the travel exhibition, visitors who check in at the Taipei booth can receive limited-edition Taipei-themed souvenirs.

The Taiwan-Korea Tourism Exchange Conference is jointly organized by the Taiwan Visitors Association and the Korea Travel Industry Association, alternating between Taiwan and Korea. Aimed at enhancing bilateral tourism cooperation and promoting mutual visits to achieve a win-win situation, this year’s event is hosted by the Korea Travel Industry Association. The conference will be held in Incheon City on June 23, and Director of the Department of Information and Tourism, Jane Yuyan Jian, will attend in person. Official and industry exchanges will provide an in-depth introduction to Taipei during the event.

Following the 2015 Gwangju Universiade, the Taipei City Government is taking over the hosting of the upcoming 2017 Taipei Universiade, which will take place in August. In conjunction with the final leg of the Universiade torch relay on June 28 to Daegu, South Korea, Taipei will also lead the organization of the Universiade Tourism Night. Teaming up with its sister city Daegu, and with active participation from athletes from both Taiwan and Korea, the event will combine sports and tourism to promote the city. It will also invite travelers from Daegu and surrounding areas to visit Taipei via direct flights.
