Gwangju Starts 100-Day Countdown to World University Summer Games
The World University Summer Games will be held in Gwangju, located about 330 kilometers south of Seoul, and its satellite cities from July 3 to 14. The Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee stated that both the host city Gwangju and South Korea’s capital Seoul will launch a series of promotional events to mark the 100-day countdown.
This Wednesday, the organizing body unveiled a 10-meter-tall tower promoting the World University Games in Seoul Plaza in front of Seoul City Hall. They said the tower will remain in the heart of the South Korean capital until the end of the Games.
The Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee will also hold a separate fashion show at Seoul’s Shilla Hotel, where the uniforms to be worn by volunteers, officials, torchbearers, and other personnel involved in the Games will be unveiled.
The committee added that from April to June, pre-Games activities will be held at venues across Gwangju. These venues will host 13 such events for 16 sports, including swimming, athletics, tennis, archery, basketball, and fencing.
The committee said that team sport draw events will take place during the Heads of Delegation (HoD) meeting from April 11 to 15, as the Games draw nearer.
According to the committee, the draws for basketball, volleyball, water polo, football, baseball, and handball will be held on April 13. The HoD meeting will be chaired by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), with representatives from participating countries joining delegates from FISU and the Organizing Committee.
Gwangju is the third South Korean city to host the World University Games. In 1997, Muju and Jeonju in North Jeolla Province jointly hosted the World University Winter Games, and in 2003, Daegu hosted the World University Summer Games.
North Korea also plans to participate in this year’s World University Games, with a 108-member delegation attending the event.
