Gwangju Art Street

Gwangju Art Street is a 300-meter-long street stretching from in front of the Gwangju East Police Station to the intersection behind Jungang Elementary School. While inheriting and developing the traditions of Gwangju, the city known as the home of art, the street also hosts exhibitions and sales of artworks. Here you can find a variety of traditional Korean items such as calligraphy and paintings, ceramics, crafts, and Korean paintings. Art Street holds an event called “Ant Market” every Saturday, which is the only folk art market of its kind in Korea and is quite well-known. Here, you can see ancient calligraphy works, coins, hairpins, brassware, wood carvings, folktales, old books, ink sticks, incense burners, and inkstones collected by folk art enthusiasts from around the country. These folk artworks still carry the essence of their ancestors. In addition to valuable antiques, the interesting stories shared by collectors are also captivating. There are also various exhibitions to explore, with the Mudeung Art Museum and outdoor exhibition spaces being among the highlights. The Mudeung Art Museum, directly managed by the district, not only hosts various exhibitions but also small-scale cultural events, making it a multifunctional cultural space. The outdoor exhibition area, completed in February 1995, is open around the clock and often mesmerizes visitors with its high-quality fine art pieces, sculptures, and other artworks. The large exhibition hall consists of 32 rooms and features a continuous schedule of planned and special exhibitions throughout the year. The management office also keeps a variety of catalogs and other valuable cultural materials from the region. As a living, integrated exhibition space, it is highly favored by visitors. Gwangju Art Street is closed to vehicles every Saturday, transforming into a place where art, culture, and people come together.

Transportation 1) Take city buses No. 9, 11, 17, 30, 222, or 333 from in front of Gwangju Station and get off at Dongbu Government Office Station. Walk for 5 minutes. (The bus ride takes about 15 minutes; by taxi, it takes 5–10 minutes.) 2) From the bus terminal, take city buses No. 9, 17, or 117, or express bus No. 1000, and get off at Dongbu Government Office Station. Walk for 5 minutes from the bus stop. (The bus ride takes about 30 minutes; by taxi, it takes 10 minutes.) 3) From Gwangju Airport, take city buses No. 5, 6, 105, or 555, or express bus No. 1000, and get off at Dongbu Government Office Station. Walk for 5 minutes from the bus stop. (The bus ride takes about 40 minutes; by taxi, it takes 25 minutes.)
