Soyang Garden

Soyang Garden is situated in Damyang County, Gwangju Metropolitan City, Republic of Korea, and is a civilian garden designed in the traditional Korean garden style. It is said that during the Joseon Dynasty, Seoam Jeong Yak-yong (1503–1557) retired from official life after his mentor Jo Gwang-jo (1482–1519) died as a result of factional strife. Surrounded by bamboo forests, the garden exudes an atmosphere of simplicity and contentment, making it a serene retreat for the soul away from worldly troubles.

The garden centers around a small stream, with peach trees and other vegetation growing on the hillsides on either side. A clear stream flows along the base of the wall, winding around rocks, and a single-log bridge spans the water, adding charm to the tranquil scenery. Within the garden, an artificial waterfall cascades down from a watermill, blending harmoniously with the surrounding natural landscape and showcasing the beauty of mountains and water. Here, one can easily imagine Confucian scholars gathering to discuss scholarship and compose literature.
