Aomori City

Aomori City is the political and economic hub of Aomori Prefecture in Japan’s northeastern Tohoku region. Situated in the central part of the prefecture, the city center expands in a fan shape from Aomori Bay across the Aomori Plain. With highly developed transportation, it is the endpoint of the Tōhoku Expressway, National Route 4, and National Route 7, positioning it as a crucial transportation hub connecting Hokkaido and Honshu (via the Tsugaru Strait Line, Seikan Ferry, etc.).

Aomori is best known for the Nebuta Festival held in summer and for its apples. The Nebuta Festival has almost become synonymous with the city itself. During the festival, dancers carrying the Nebuta—colorful floats adorned with warrior figures—parade through the city’s main streets, chanting “rassera!” in an energetic and vibrant celebration that attracts many visitors from other regions. The city center lies on the vast Aomori Plain, while the southeastern side faces the northern end of the Ōu Mountains, resulting in significant temperature variations that create ideal conditions for apple cultivation. Aomori apples are renowned for their vibrant color, high sugar content, and variety. From mid-July to mid-November each year, visitors can also enjoy apple-picking activities at local orchards.

Aomori is also a famous hot spring resort in Japan, with popular destinations such as Asamushi Onsen, Sōun Onsen, and Arakawa Onsen attracting tourists from around the world every year.
