Cherry blossoms in Aomori Prefecture, northeastern Japan, begin to bloom from the end of April, with Hirosaki Park being one of the country's premier cherry blossom viewing spots, recognized as a top 100 cherry blossom site and one of Japan’s top 100 scenic locations. This year, the Hirosaki Park Cherry Blossom Festival is held from April 23 to May 5, attracting around 2 million visitors from both Japan and overseas every year.

In addition to the main Somei Yoshino cherry trees, Hirosaki Park is home to about 50 varieties and a total of 2,600 cherry trees, including weeping cherries and double-flowered cherry blossoms. Whether strolling or boating through the cherry blossom tunnel along the western moat, you can enjoy various views of the blossoms—reflections on the water, pink carpets of petals floating on the river, and the illuminated night blossoms. Among them, there are over 400 Somei Yoshino cherry trees that are more than 100 years old.

At Hirosaki Park, you can enjoy six different perspectives of cherry blossoms. The most classic view is the combination of Hirosaki Castle and the blossoms, especially the red Shimojō Bridge in front of the castle tower, creating a quintessential Japanese spring cherry blossom scene. When the breeze blows and petals fall onto the water, it becomes especially romantic. Especially in the later part of the blooming season, the scattered petals cover the surface of the moat, forming drifting, soft pink “flower rafts” that are incredibly dreamy and picturesque.

Additionally, by joining a cherry blossom viewing party, you can enjoy the flowers without bringing anything—just show up and immerse yourself in the experience. Sit under the cherry blossoms with local residents, enjoy fine food and drinks while admiring the blooms. The event also offers boat rental services and features numerous food stalls.
