Aomori Prefecture, located at the northernmost tip of Japan’s main island Honshu and renowned for its sweet apples, unique seafood, and breathtaking landscapes, attracts visitors from across the country every spring to Hirosaki Castle to admire the astonishing number of cherry blossom trees both inside and outside the park. From the castle’s construction in 1611 by the Tsugaru lords who unified the Tsugaru area until the Meiji Restoration abolished the feudal domains in 1871, the Tsugaru lords resided in Hirosaki Castle for 260 years of peaceful rule, bringing prosperity to Hirosaki. The well-preserved architecture of Hirosaki Castle is also a rare scenic marvel in all of Japan.

During the hanami period, the “Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival” is not only a gathering of northeastern Japan’s food stalls but also features performances of Tsugaru folk songs and local performing arts, along with the surreal experience of night cherry blossom viewing. Attracting over 2 million visitors each year, it is a major event in the northeast. For the best angle to capture the full beauty of the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival, stand on Yokoichi Bridge over the moat—you can clearly see Hirosaki Castle’s keep and the weeping cherry trees, while the cherry-lined path along the western moat forms a long tunnel of blossoms. The white blooms, set against the distant Mt. Iwaki, create an enchanting scene.

When visiting Aomori for cherry blossoms, don’t miss the streets of Hirosaki, filled with exotic charm, as well as various specialty dishes and cultural crafts. During the Meiji period, many missionaries from Europe and Russia visited Hirosaki, leading to the construction of many Western-style buildings. The Hirosaki Ascension Church, the Japan Christian Church Hirosaki Parish, the Aomori Bank Memorial Hall, and the Former Tohoku Gijuku Foreign Teachers' Residence are among the sites where you can admire architecture blending foreign styles and experience a different side of the northeast’s charm.
