Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival in Aomori, featuring folk songs of Tsugaru and a fireworks display

Aomori Prefecture, located at the northernmost tip of Japan’s Honshu Island and renowned for its sweet apples, unique seafood, and breathtaking scenery, attracts visitors from across the country every spring to Hirosaki Castle to admire the astonishing number of cherry blossom trees both inside and outside the park. Statistics show there are about 3,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees, nearly 1,500 wild cherry trees, and 500 weeping cherry trees. With over 5,000 cherry trees in total, Hirosaki Park is enveloped in delicate pink hues during the spring hanami season.

Hirosaki Park, centered around Hirosaki Castle and commonly known as Takaoka Park, was once the residence of successive lords of the Tsugaru Domain who ruled the region. From the castle’s construction in 1611 by the Tsugaru lords who unified the area until the Meiji Restoration abolished feudal domains in 1871, the Tsugaru lords resided in Hirosaki Castle for 260 years of peaceful rule, bringing prosperity to Hirosaki. The well-preserved architecture of Hirosaki Castle is also a rare and spectacular sight in all of Japan.

During the hanami season, the “Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival” is not only a gathering of northeastern Japan’s food stalls, but also features performances of Tsugaru folk songs and local traditional arts, along with a mesmerizing night cherry blossom viewing event in the evenings. Attracting over 2 million visitors each year, it is one of the major events in the Tohoku region. For the best angle to capture the full beauty of the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival, stand on the Takaoka Bridge over the moat—you can clearly see Hirosaki Castle’s keep and the weeping cherry trees. Along the cherry tree-lined path of the Nishi-Omoteguchi, a long tunnel of blossoms is formed, with white blooms shining brilliantly against the backdrop of Mount Iwaki, creating an enchanting cherry blossom scene.

When visiting Aomori to view cherry blossoms, don’t miss the foreign atmosphere of Hirosaki’s streets, along with its various specialty cuisines and cultural crafts. During the Meiji period, many missionaries from Europe and Russia visited Hirosaki, leading to the construction of numerous Western-style buildings. The Hirosaki Ascension Church, the Japan Christian Church Hirosaki Parish, the Aomori Bank Memorial Hall, and the Former Foreign Teachers' Residence of Tohoku Gijuku are all examples where you can admire architecture blending foreign styles and experience a different charm of the Tohoku region.
