Mount Hakkoda

Mount Hakkoda is a volcanic mountain range located in the southwestern part of Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture, in the northeastern region of Honshu, Japan. It is divided into northern and southern groups, comprising over ten stratovolcanoes and volcanic domes. Together with the surrounding Lake Towada and the Oirase River, it falls under the administration of Towada-Hachimantai National Park and is a well-known tourist destination in northeastern Japan.

The volcanic peaks of the Mount Hakkoda range are composed of non-alkaline mafic rocks, most of which are andesite, dacite, and basalt. Although both the northern and southern volcanic groups were formed during the Pleistocene epoch, the rocks of the Northern Hakkoda group date back approximately 13,000 to 700,000 years, while those of the Southern Hakkoda group are even older, formed between 700,000 and 1,700,000 years ago. Mount Odake, the highest peak in the Hakkoda range, stands at an elevation of 1,585 meters and can be reached by a four-hour hike from Sukayu Onsen at the mountain's base.

Mount Hakkoda is part of the "Hyakumeizan" (100 Famous Japanese Mountains) list and is the most famous sightseeing spot in Aomori City. Especially in winter, when the entire mountain range is covered in deep snow, it becomes a paradise for alpine skiing and has received high praise from skiing enthusiasts both in Japan and abroad.
