Lake Towada

Lake Towada is a double caldera lake formed by the eruption of Mount Towada, located at an altitude of 400 meters on the border between Aomori Prefecture and Akita Prefecture in Japan’s northeastern region. It is 327 meters deep, with a surface area of 61.1 square kilometers, making it the largest lake on Honshu and the third deepest in all of Japan after Lake Tazawa (423 meters, Akita Prefecture) and Lake Shikotsu (363 meters, Hokkaido).

Due to its great depth, the water of Lake Towada is exceptionally blue and transparent, offering endless charm and ranking as one of the most beautiful lakes in the northeastern region. In recent years, tourism centered around the lake has continued to thrive, with increasing promotion efforts by local authorities. In 1936, Lake Towada and its surrounding areas became part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park. In 1953, the renowned Japanese sculptor and poet Kotaro Takamura created the iconic Girl Statue for Lake Towada, further boosting its fame and establishing it as a highly celebrated sightseeing destination.
