Oirase River

The Oirase River is a small river located in the eastern part of Aomori Prefecture in northeastern Japan. It stretches 67 kilometers in length and is the only outflowing river from Lake Towada, Japan's third deepest lake. It meanders eastward through Towada City, Rokunohe Town, Oirase, and Hachinohe City, eventually emptying into the Pacific Ocean. The river basin covers an area of 820 square kilometers, providing irrigation resources for the surrounding areas and forming stunning landscapes such as the Oirase Valley and numerous waterfalls.

From its source at the mouth of the lake near Ko-no-sho to the Yakushi area, the Oirase River forms the world-renowned Oirase Gorge. The gorge features ever-changing, dynamic, and untamed streams, becoming even more picturesque as you go deeper, with numerous shallow rapids adding to its charm. It is home to 14 major waterfalls, including the famous Awanoyu Falls and Kumoi no Taki, which attract large numbers of visitors every year. Moreover, in late October, when the weather is crisp and autumn leaves are in full color, the air is fresh and the scenery is breathtaking, making it an ideal destination for late-autumn leaf-peeping.
