Katori City

Katori City is located in the northeastern part of Chiba Prefecture, bordering Ibaraki Prefecture to the north. It was formed through the merger of Sawara City with the towns of Katori District: Omigawa, Yamada, and Kurimoto. Blessed with a naturally warm climate and fertile soil, the city plays an important role as a food production hub for the Greater Tokyo Area. Since ancient times, it has been known as a “granary.”

Katori City is a city surrounded by waterways and greenery, radiating the brilliance of nature, history, and culture. Its northern region features the Tone River, full of water town charm, stretching from east to west with expansive rice paddies and distinctive scenery. The southern part consists of plains dominated by forests and fields, occupying a corner of the North Kanto Plateau with beautiful natural landscapes. In addition to numerous nostalgic natural features such as farmland, forests, ponds, and the riverside scenery along the Tone River, the city also boasts the former residence of Ino Tadataka, who first completed a nationally surveyed map of Japan. Tourist destinations include the Sawara Cultural Hall, the Ino Tadataka Memorial Museum, the Water Town Sawara Float Museum, and the Water Town Sawara Aquatic Botanical Garden.
