Taiping Mountain Forest Recreation Area

The Taiping Mountain Forest Recreation Area is located in Datong Township, Yilan County, Taiwan. Formerly the Taiping Mountain Forest, it was transformed into a forest recreation area in 1989. It is said that even during the logging period, Taiping Mountain became one of Taiwan’s Twelve Scenic Spots, thanks to its natural wonders such as sea of clouds and spectacular sunrises. After the forest railway began operation, the number of hikers increased steadily.

After the war, the number of hikers did not decline but increased. In particular, the popular mountain bumper cars and cable cars were especially captivating. On weekends and holidays, the once tranquil mountain area would instantly become bustling with activity. In 1989, the Taiping Mountain Forest Recreation Area was officially established. Due to its diverse management approach and the preservation of historical remnants from its former production operations — such as mountain railways, cable cars, forest carts, locomotives, passenger cars, log skidders, and cypress wood buildings — the area has been enriched with unique tourism resources, attracting a continuous stream of visitors. In recent years, with the opening and improvement of mountain access roads and the relaxation of entry restrictions, the number of tourists visiting Taiping Mountain has grown year by year. The ancient Taiping Mountain has flourished once again, further highlighting its uniqueness compared to other regions.
