With a strong Japanese architectural style, the Yilan Literature Museum was formerly the principal’s residence of the old agricultural school. The serene surroundings and peaceful atmosphere once attracted renowned actor Takeshi Kaneshiro to film a TV commercial here, drawing numerous visitors and turning the museum into a popular photo spot.

Located in the Jin and Mei areas of northern Yilan, Yilan’s brick kilns are also known as the Jinmei Brick Kiln. Brick production began here during the Qing Dynasty, and the area became known as the “brick kiln nest” due to the concentration of kilns. During the Japanese colonial period, demand for bricks surged, marking the industry’s heyday. However, with technological advances and the rise of concrete replacing brick, the kilns gradually declined and were abandoned. The Yilan Brick Kiln remains the best-preserved ancient brick kiln site.

Taiwan’s first JiMi-themed square was created through urban renewal, transforming the former railway dormitory area south of Yilan Railway Station into a bright and open recreational space. It presents the theme “Fleeting Moments of Scenery,” drawing imagery and stories from three picture books — “Secrets in the Stars,” “The Village of the Opposite,” and “Turn Left, Turn Right” — to blend travel and life’s fleeting scenes with the venue. Strolling through, you feel as if you’ve stepped into a picture book or that the characters have jumped out and come to life before your eyes.

Popular attractions near Yilan Railway Station include JiMi Square, Happy Transfer Station, and Diudiu Forest. The Happy Transfer Station, renovated from an old bus terminal, holds nostalgic value for many. Its theme is based on JiMi’s picture books “The World Doesn’t Have to Worry About Me” and “My World Is All You,” with outdoor play areas featuring elephants, giraffes, and other large installations serving as art pieces.
