Luodong is located in the center of the Lanyang Plain and serves as the commercial hub of Yilan County, as well as the smallest township in Taiwan by area. In its early days, it thrived as a lumber distribution center for the railway of the Taiping Mountain Forest, becoming an important commercial center south of the Lanyang River in Yilan. Before development, Luodong was a mountainous forested area, particularly known for its large population of wild monkeys. The name "Luodong" originates from the local indigenous Kavalan people, who referred to "monkeys" (rutung) as "laodong," and when Han settlers began cultivating the Lanyang Plain, they retained the name, calling the place "Luodong."
