Yilan Brick Kiln was an important producer of “red bricks” during the Japanese colonial period. For a while, to revitalize the community, graffiti artists were invited to paint murals here, using bright colors to add vibrancy to local homes and cultural workshops, turning the neighborhood into a large open-air art space.

Although it’s not as bustling as it once was, seeing the towering chimney still evokes the rise and fall of Yilan’s red brick industry. Today, a section of the original railway track used to transport bricks remains, along with a brick cart to help you experience that era. It’s also a popular spot for Instagram photos.

Besides the Yilan Brick Kiln, there's another super popular IG-worthy spot nearby — the Qinghe Bridge Jinmei Boardwalk (also known as Qinghe Bridge Skywalk). Spanning across the Yilan River, this bridge isn't just functional for traffic but also very family-friendly. Underneath the bridge, there are eight swings, while the boardwalk features rest tables, chairs, and exercise equipment. The large grassy area beneath the bridge is perfect for family picnics, running, and playing, and there's even a stone slide. For great views, head to the observation deck, or enjoy a bike ride along the path. Seniors especially love this spot — it’s a great place for a stroll.

Try their hand-poured coffee with beans from Kang — it's a space that combines handmade crafts with light meals. If you have time, pick up some plates to take home. You can also ride a bike or visit the nearby Lixing Elementary School — both are great options.

Seriously? The slide at Zhongshan Elementary School has been upgraded again. Slides have an endless appeal to kids — the thrill of freely sliding down makes their little hearts soar.

Five slides that are endlessly fun for kids. There's the giant cement slide shaped like a landscape island, a sailboat-shaped play structure, a two-story double-track "Sun-Moon-Star" slide, a canned-goods-shaped play structure, and a wooden train slide. Come and enjoy the thrill of sliding freely.

Wow, near the Zhongshan Elementary School Dome, there's a massive cement slide. Walk straight in from the main entrance and you'll find a pirate ship slide. Plus, there's an extra-large cement slide that goes down from the second floor. Along with the canned-goods play structure, within a 200-meter radius, there are five giant slides to enjoy. After playing, it only takes 2 minutes to walk to the nearby Jimmy Liao Park, which also has a sandbox and more slides.

At Yilan Railway Station, a giraffe pops up suddenly — the long-necked creature peeks out with sleepy eyes and a gentle smile. Don’t forget to get off and snap a photo when you pass by.

Right across from Yilan Railway Station is Jimmy Liao Square, featuring "Doodoo Forest" that blends the imagery of train ballads and lush green woods. The open-air design lets you look up and admire Jimmy Liao’s artwork "Starry Starry Night," featuring a dream-filled starlight train ready to depart. The girl and boy, and you watching them — don’t you also feel that sense of wonder and dreams? Hands pressed against the windows, heads sticking out, enjoying the refreshing breeze, traveling together on a fantastical adventure.

Next to Jimmy Liao Square is the “Happiness Transfer Station,” built on the former site of a Kuo-Kuang bus lot. Old buses have been transformed into installations, continuing the Jimmy Liao theme and planned to become an even more complete Jimmy Liao park. The outdoor children's play area includes repurposed buses that aren't just art — look closely and you’ll see an elephant’s trunk that’s actually a slide, its back legs are spiral stairs, and the front legs serve as metal climbing frames. Nearby, a giraffe serves as a giant playground structure, with a periscope inside its belly — like a submarine — letting you peer out from its head to see the beautiful surroundings. Before you leave, don’t forget to “give Happiness Transfer Station a kiss”!

Taiwan’s first museum themed entirely around microbes — the “Microbe Treasure Museum & Tourism Workshop.” It was established because most people have only a vague understanding of the microbes all around us, often feeling repelled or fearful. The goal of the Microbe Treasure Museum is to deepen public knowledge about the microbial world. Professional guides (and additional DIY activities) help visitors explore the microscopic universe.

In about two hours, guides will first show visitors an introductory video, explain the exhibits at the Microbe Treasure Museum, and then teach how to inoculate Cordyceps militaris. Kids can uncover the mysteries of the microbial world and interact with microbes in a dedicated space, revealing the wonders of these tiny organisms found in nature. (In addition to Cordyceps militaris, there are also DIY projects like face masks and toners.)

As soon as you step into Ju Zhi Xiang (Orange Homeland), you’ll notice a white glass house on your right — this is AGRIOZ Café. Enter through a small door on the other side of the same building, and you’ll find a mini AGRIOZ showroom and a DIY kumquat preserve-making area. Across from it is a brown building, which is the Ju Zhi Xiang gift shop, selling a wide variety of kumquat preserve products. Go further inside, and you’ll reach the factory tour area.

In addition to offering samples of the signature products from Orange Village, the souvenir area also provides complimentary golden kumquat tea to refresh and quench your thirst. The image gallery not only allows you to DIY kumquat preserves, but the overall environment is designed with a strong rustic charm. Mountain Stronghold Village is a bakery and restaurant themed around the giants Chikui and Chiyan. The shop is divided into two sections: one mainly sells bread, cakes, pastries, and snack-type souvenirs. Each item has a very unique name and stylish packaging.

The other side is the restaurant, which serves more Western-style meals, including wood-fired pizza, burgers, pasta, cold drinks, fried items, grilled dishes, and desserts. Their signature items are the super-sized Chikui Butt Burger and the Villain Duck. For baked goods, their standout is the signature Villain (a French baguette). Besides taking photos and enjoying great food here, don’t forget to bring back a villain-themed souvenir that fights evil—just like the iconic Villain bread stick.

I’ve visited Crystal Hotel several times—for weddings, Peking duck dinners—but I’ve never stayed overnight (it feels weird for a Yilan local to stay at a hotel in Yilan). But I’ve long heard about the kids-only Fondochique Castle, which is quite famous in family circles. It offers a huge play area of over 200 ping, complete with electric cars, jumping horses, a splash pool, slides, and various DIY activities. But getting in isn’t easy—it’s exclusive to hotel guests only.

Located on Zhongshan Road in Yilan City, “Lin Wu Iron Workshop” is a well-known old-school copper gong manufacturer across the province. Master Lin Wu, once an ironworker, has been crafting copper gongs for a full sixty years. Kids get to hear the deep, resonant, ancient tones of the gong for the first time up close—and it’s truly awe-inspiring. Under this powerful sound, you can also book a session where children can make their own copper gongs. First, they tap away on round metal discs, then the pieces go through machine refining to become small copper gongs. After some assembly, they turn into court-style copper gong ornaments—a brand-new experience for the kids.

Yesterday we went to the Yilan County Government—actually, we shouldn’t say “went,” because our home is right nearby. During the Lunar New Year holiday, most civil servants were off, so the entire Central Park had fewer than 20 visitors. The vast park was practically ours, just for the two families!!

One of the great things about Yilan is that the parks are incredibly large—so big it’s unbelievable—and you never have to deal with crowds. On the side near the train station, there’s a children’s play area, and on the other side, there's a rollerblading practice rink. Every weekend, it becomes a paradise for kids. Both adults and children stroll around, play frisbee, fly kites, go down slides... and there’s also a huge sandpit.

At Yilan Dongmen Night Market, there’s a famous spot called “Nantang Dumpling House” where you can eat dumplings. It’s clean and cheap—we spent just NT$200 for two adults and two kids in one meal, truly great value.

We were exhausted from all the playing. This was originally the last stop, but what a great spot—great food, a wide variety of dishes, and very affordable prices. You definitely need to make a reservation. You won’t believe we ordered seven dishes, one soup, plus fried noodles and fried rice, along with free plain rice, rice noodles, and lard rice, and we also downed several bottles of drinks. The total was just 2,355 NTD, and we took up two tables... haha.

Shengyang Leisure Farm, formerly known as Shengyang Aquatic Plant Farm. As the name suggests, this is one of Taiwan’s top aquatic plant farms. The variety of aquatic plants here is simply astounding. If you’re into fishkeeping or aquatic plants, you’ll definitely leave with something. One highlight here is the DIY eco-bottle. But before you start, you have to finish a bottle of soy milk from Yuanshan Township Farmers’ Association first. Then you add sand, aquatic plants, digestive bacteria, and a small shrimp. This shrimp doesn’t need any extra feed—the bottle ecosystem will sustain it on its own.

Trust us, kids will absolutely scream with excitement upon arriving here. There are all kinds of candies here. You can even try your hand at candy DIY (limited sessions and numbers, so book in advance). Windy Candy Workshop is a tourist factory set up by Windy Mart in Yilan, but it’s not a full-scale factory. The actual production line is in Nantou, while the Yilan branch only has one demonstration line for experiential purposes.

Right next door is MONICA Pancake House, which sells not only Belgian waffles but also ice cream and beverages. And let me tell you, those Belgian waffles are seriously delicious.

The children’s play area features slides and rocking horses—perfect for letting the little ones run around. There are also benches nearby where parents can take a break.

There are little bridges and flowing water, with fish swimming leisurely. Near the parking lot, there’s a small pond that actually has a hot spring outlet. In winter, you might even see steam rising from the outlet.

The Yuanshan Aircraft Shelter was built during wartime and served as an important military facility in the Yuanshan area. Back then, barefoot soldiers would push planes along Jinshan East Road next to the shelter and hide them in roadside bunkers to avoid U.S. bombings. After the war, a veteran surnamed Yang converted the aircraft shelter into a residence until 2001, when the Yuanshan Township Office secured it from the military to establish the Pacific War Exhibition Hall.

Last time I brought my family to Wanglong Pond, the elders were so impressed by the scenic views that they wanted to come back again. As we were approaching Wanglong Pond, Shanshan spotted a sign along the road that read “Rabbit Maze” and immediately started excitedly asking, “Is there really a rabbit at the Rabbit Maze?” (The phrase “rabbit himself”... where did that even come from?). Having heard from the lovely homemaker Nami that Rabbit Maze is a new Yilan attraction x restaurant—and that there really are rabbits—we adjusted our itinerary on the kids’ request to check out the rabbit himself up in the hills first.

I’ve always wanted to make wood-fired pizza myself, and Juanjuan immediately made it happen. She first took me for a walk around Wanglong Pond in Yuanshan to get some fresh air. It was New Year’s time, and there were really a lot of people—but thankfully there was a parking lot, so everything went smoothly.

When it comes to Yuanshan, everyone knows about Wanglong Pond because of its drama filming location, and its subsequent planning has been quite well-developed, attracting many visitors. But Yuanshan also has the much smaller Leigong Pond Park, which features a loop path around the pond. The park includes facilities such as laundry stations, lakeside walking paths, fishing platforms, and nighttime lighting. In winter, you can even observe migratory water birds here, while in summer it’s a great spot for playing in the water or soaking in cold springs.

However, since the water play area isn’t very large or deep, most people head to Maoxie Maopao for splashing around, making this place relatively tranquil. When I visited on a Saturday afternoon, there weren’t many people, and it was really refreshing to cool my feet in the shade under the trees. Even if you don’t dip your feet in, the trestle bridge here is a great IG photo spot. There are also lots of little fish in the lake—it’s a perfect place for a post-meal stroll. Oh, and there’s also a Leigong Pond Cold Spring BBQ Restaurant nearby, with grilled fish as its signature dish.

With its spacious and lofty interior, bright large windows, and no air conditioning but still no stuffiness, the place is filled with the fragrance of flowers and the freshness of green plants. In its indoor garden spanning over 1,000 square meters, you can not only learn about various plants but also experience floral fragrances. The wide variety of DIY activities will make for some truly unique souvenirs from your trip.

There’s also a small bakery where you can buy freshly baked, fragrant bread. They also offer self-service meals and afternoon tea. Here, you can relax with a cup of coffee paired with a freshly baked slice of bread, or leisurely read a book. It’s an extraordinary experience for all your senses—sight, taste, and smell.

Many people have visited Vanilla Fragrance, but few know they pass through Neicheng, as the nearby Yuanshan Veterans Hospital means the area is mostly home to veterans and farming families. In 2005, through community revitalization efforts, old iron ox carts once used for farming were repurposed as the main tool for transforming the community. With the creation of the Likka Rest Stop, community spirit was strengthened, linking the clanking sounds of the carts to the area’s leisure agriculture, natural attractions, and cultural heritage sites.

Located in Jiaoxi Township, the Orchid Garden spans a spacious area of about 4,000 pyeong and features a 500-seat rest area. In addition to cultivating orchids, it offers various sightseeing routes including an ecological park, cactus zone, foliage plant area, and aquatic plant section. It’s a relaxing destination for family flower viewing and also makes a great rainy-day alternative.

Originally thought to be an adult-oriented tourist factory, this area instantly felt incredibly family-friendly. The spacious “Children’s Play Area” is designed to resemble a wild forest and is equipped with children’s books, toys, and several toy cars and rocking horses for use. My 1-year-old daughter Yuwan and her cousins had a blast playing here, clearly thrilled—despite the lack of air conditioning, the kids’ enthusiasm wasn’t dampened at all.

I’ve recently noticed more cars visiting the Kinma Bio-Tech Aquaculture R&D Center near my parents’ home—it seems to have changed quite a bit. I remember when this attraction first opened, the facilities were pretty basic, but the shrimp farming tour was fascinating, albeit let down by the unimpressive displays. Now, however, it’s become much more engaging and is perfect for families. Currently, it operates under the concept of an aquarium + shrimp farming tour + multi-purpose dining and rest area. According to my mom, the indoor farming area is still being planned and refined, and I’m very much looking forward to the future improvements.

I really love the detailed introductions of the marine life in each tank and the thoughtful small stairs provided for toddlers. They also offer cooked shrimp service, and you can enjoy coffee, cake, and pancakes here. If you’re hungry, there are hot meal sets available too. Oh—and there’s also DIY activities and shark feeding experiences. The space is large, with a comfortable children’s play area and a souvenir corner. I noticed many young people enjoying beer with shrimp here. All in all, this spot makes a great rainy-day alternative.

Next, we visited the open-range spot “Longtan Lake.” The serene beauty of Longtan Lake needs no introduction. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the lake covers an area of about 17 hectares and is the largest of Yilan’s five famous lakes. Recently, Longtan Lake has gained attention for featuring a giant slide—shaped like a UFO—that has the free-range chickens playing like crazy.

Today I visited the place where Dad works. This patch of turf is my go-to spot when I’m feeling upset—just sit and gaze at the sea and Guishan Island. A big lawn where kids can run and play freely, along with the company of mom and dad, is truly the source of children’s health and happiness!

In addition to its waterfront green landscaping and scenic pavilions, Tangweigou Park also features a zen-inspired cypress bath and a semi-outdoor foot-soaking communal area. Here you can not only soak your feet but also enjoy a hot spring bath. The surrounding area also has numerous food stalls, cafés, and opportunities to experience hot spring fish. The streets on either side are lined with shops, including well-known souvenir stores and restaurants. Just across the street from Tangweigou Park lies Zhongshan Road, the area of Jiaoxi Old Street. Living in Toucheng, there’s so much to do and see. Lanyang Crab Farm (Thai Shrimp Ecological Park) is run by an owner who insists on organic farming methods to raise Thai shrimp. Located right at the entrance of Lazy Inn, this place is popular among families with kids—there are child-sized fishing rods (single hooks), and the environment is fantastic. For 1.5 hours, it’s 300 NT dollars, and if you don’t catch enough, they’ll top you up with half a jin. You can even have your catch cooked on-site. Cooking service for half a jin as one dish costs an additional 120 NT; charcoal grilling is free.

By sheer coincidence, I stumbled upon the “Waiao Service Area.” With its very yellow exterior, I initially thought it was just a model home for a real estate project, but it turned out to be a uniquely designed building born from an international architectural competition. Parking costs NT$50 per entry. There’s a free sandy beach right in front of Guishan Island, attracting many sand-play and surfing visitors. Inside, there’s a free foot-washing area, and a paid shower area with indoor private stalls. The water source is tap water, and solar-powered heaters provide both hot and cold showers. This “Red Crab Seafood Restaurant” is our second visit, and it was specifically recommended by Dad. This resort center is located by the sea. We originally planned to soak in the hot springs while enjoying the ocean view and having a little afternoon tea here (hot spring + simple afternoon tea for NT$600). But since the hot spring water wasn’t hot enough that day and the actual site didn’t seem worth the price, we opted instead to tour the owner’s private collection, guided by a professional guide. The fee was NT$180.

Saw this place featured on the “Foodie Show” and immediately saved it to my list right away. Think about it—every time I visit Yilan, I end up at the night markets packed with crowds, waiting in long lines for food I want to eat, or skipping other places for fear of getting a dud. This time, I really got something different. There’s free parking here, no worries about rain, and on another note, you save on parking fees and time spent hunting for spots at the night market. It’s pretty great.

The set meals are affordably priced. The W4 set comes with black tea (can be refilled), a super generous creamy soup with plenty of ingredients, and dessert—and even better, there's no service charge. The space here is spacious, the seating is roomy, and the restroom even has a stylish design. The main dishes use quality meat, the noodles are super chewy and filling. Our family of four left totally stuffed and satisfied.

It started pouring rain that afternoon. Our original plan was to go on an indoor guided tour and then ride bikes to the Dongshan River to skip stones. What now? Well, we put on our conical hats and headed to a farmer’s fallow field instead... There were all kinds of DIY activities here. DIY fertilizer water-skipping was a first for us—the process was like kneading dough balls, and the kids had a blast. I really liked the local community vibe. The neighborhood chief is an absolute master of stone-skipping, the tour guide was a super nice big kid, and the impressive straw crafts were all handmade by a neighbor mom. Coming to Yilan this time gave me a whole new kind of experience.

Yilan Dongshan Railway Station, one of the most beautiful train stations in Taiwan, is also a uniquely designed station invested in by Taiwan Railways. Its distinctive lines attract photography enthusiasts for great shots. Plus, the grassy lawn and slide beneath the station have become a popular family-friendly spot recently. Whether the weather is good or bad, it’s a great place to relax and let kids burn off energy.

On weekends, there’s also a flea market. So if you’re looking for a free, open space to hang out and beat boredom, this is it.

As introduced by Juan Juan Tou, Xihe is not just a frozen seafood company but also a tourist factory. Have you noticed how many traditional industries are not only modernizing their operations but also incorporating tourism elements to boost appeal?

Becoming a tourist factory not only increases industry visibility but also drives economic benefits—it’s truly a win-win situation. But I think the biggest beneficiaries are us parents with kids, because it’s educational and fun. There’s food, play, and knowledge all in one, making the whole trip feel incredibly enriching.

Put on a straw hat and head into the fields to harvest scallions—you can even take the ones you pick home. Don’t think being a farmer is easy, no no no. Next, you’ll have to wash the scallions, pick off the dead leaves, and rinse off the dirt from the roots. Be careful not to break the leaves when shaking them off—that’s how you know you’re done.

Feeling hungry? Follow the instructor, roll out the dough, sprinkle on plenty of chopped scallions—wow—get your hands moving. The sizzling sound of the freshly made scallion pancake on the pan will make your stomach growl. A dough covered in scallion bits—how can you call this a scallion pancake? This is a scallion cake!! Sigh… The place is small, and the instructions aren’t very clear. But when you sit there eating your own creation, it’s still super satisfying.

Rachel invited us to take a walk at Plum Lake. We were initially unenthusiastic, but Rechal mentioned that a “Little Bear Bookstore” by Wu Danru had just opened near the lake, and we could go for some afternoon tea... When we arrived at Plum Lake, sure enough, the Little Bear Bookstore was packed. We had made a reservation but had to wait for a phone call to be notified when we could enter. So in the meantime, we let the kids roam around the lakeside.

This stone slab bridge underwent restoration and landscape preservation work in 1999 (the 88th year of the Republic of China) and was designated as a county-level historical site on April 19 of the same year, offering a strong sense of nostalgia.

The Dapu Yong’an Stone Slab Bridge is located in Wujie Township, Yilan County. In the past, the Lanyang Plain was rich in water resources with irrigation channels everywhere. Along the Tonglan Ancient Road that ran from north to south, there were two stone slab bridges—one in the north called the Wunan Stone Slab Bridge, and one in the south called the Yong’an Stone Slab Bridge. The Yong’an Stone Slab Bridge was a necessary crossing on the ancient road from Luodong to Lizihjian during the Qing Dynasty. The bridge is now situated next to Cheng’an Temple on Xianhe Middle Road, Xianhe Village, Wujie Township, Yilan County, and is commonly referred to by locals as Dapu Bridge or Yong’an Bridge. Although it’s on my must-visit list, I’m glad I didn’t make a special trip just for it. I think the day I went wasn’t the best—there happened to be several tour buses, and the place was packed, so it was more of a quick stop. The Bubble Tea Story Museum had the least people. I took a look at the history of bubble tea and found out it can be traced back to the time of Empress Dowager Cixi.

With the promotion of the Bai Mi Community Development Association, the Bai Mi Wooden Clog Village has gradually become a well-known tourist attraction, bringing new vitality to the community. Although the wooden clog industry has declined for two or three decades, the Bai Mi area has revitalized the wooden clog business by using creativity and imagination to give wooden clogs new life. They’ve transformed a daily necessity into a handicraft, allowing wooden clogs to be not only worn but also painted, decorated, and admired. The area’s old name was Bai Mi Weng because the community’s terrain resembles a rice jar.

As is customary, here’s a brief introduction to the area: Wuwei Port Waterfowl Reserve is located in Su’ao Town, Yilan County, covering approximately 102 hectares. The main waterways in the Wuwei Port area all originate from the Xincheng River. Since the Qing Dynasty, historical records have referred to this river by various names, including Masai River, Wukeng River, and Xincheng River, while locals commonly call it Houhou River. The area is teeming with ducks and geese, making it a paradise for hunters. These hunters passed down the name “Wuwei Port” — meaning “Port with No Tail” — by word of mouth, referring to the river harbor located beneath the cliff of Beian’ao, which has no outlet to the sea.

The wood-fired pizza here requires a reservation and is guided by community members who take turns leading the sessions. We booked for 1:30 PM. Even though we arrived late, the volunteers were kind enough to help us make our pizza.
