Like Green Island, Orchid Island is a volcanic island formed by underwater volcanic eruptions, where lava solidified upon contact with seawater. The island was formerly known as "Red Head Island" (Hongtou Yu) because the hill at its northwest corner, when illuminated by the setting sun, resembles a red human head. It was later renamed "Orchid Island" due to the abundance of orchids on the island.

Introduction

Yeyou Village

The administrative center of the island, home to the township office, junior high school, and bus terminal. The nearby Kaiyuan Harbor serves as a key gateway for external transportation, with ferries operating between here and Fugang Fishing Port in Taitung. To the north stands a lighthouse, where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Orchid Island’s scenic landscapes of mountains and sea.

Langdao Village

This village showcases the most traditional architectural style on the island, where you can admire the underground-style thatched houses built by the Yami people. When visiting, it's essential to respect local culture. Tourists should be polite and mindful of local customs to avoid offending any taboos.

Wukong Cave

Named after its five large sea-eroded caves, the fourth and fifth of which are interconnected. The cliffs near the caves feature traditional handmade clay figurines depicting biblical stories, showcasing the artistic talent of the Yami people.

Orchid Island’s Unique Rock Formations

Like Green Island, Orchid Island has been shaped over the years by weathering and seawater erosion, resulting in many uniquely shaped reefs and rocks such as Crocodile Rock, Tank Rock, Jade Maiden Rock, Hen Rock, Frog Rock, Twin Lions Rock, Helmet Rock, Elephant Trunk Rock, and Dragon Head Rock, among others.

Public Transport:

Air: Flights are available between Taitung and Orchid Island.

Sea: Ferries depart from Fugang in Taitung to Orchid Island, operated by ships including Hengxing, Super Star, Triumph, and Xinlonghao.

Self-driving:

Transportation on the island is mainly by scooter or the island loop bus. Scooter and motorcycle rentals are also available.
