From December to February each year, the vibrant red Taitung red quinoa, as it matures and changes color, becomes a unique cultural landscape of Taitung County. During this season, fiery red floral carpets quietly spread across the region, including at Taitung Forest Park, Liwu Tribe, Baomao Tribe, and more. Stalks of red quinoa reaching skyward form a sea of flowers interwoven with fiery red, bright yellow, and vivid orange hues — a truly stunning sight.

Red quinoa is highly nutritious

Aside from admiring the red quinoa, the Taitung Soil and Water Conservation Bureau has partnered with travel agencies and local accommodation providers to launch the “Taitung Leisure Tour.” This program offers itineraries with different themes for each day of the week, including special red quinoa season routes, allowing visitors to experience the rural charm of Taitung.

Taitung red quinoa is scattered across the hills of the Hengchun Peninsula. It is a traditional grain crop of the indigenous peoples, with notably high nutritional value. Its seeds contain roughly twice the basic nutrients of rice, a protein content similar to that of wheat, and up to 14% dietary fiber — a level unmatched by any other known food. Red quinoa also contains rare elements that can enhance immunity, such as selenium (Se) and germanium (Ge), making it an excellent source of comprehensive nutrition.
