Old warehouses turned IG hotspots: Taitung’s two major cultural sugar mills

Taiwan has many long-established factories and buildings. Over the years and with the changes of time, many industries and their former glory have faded, eventually transforming into tourist attractions. Below are two recommended sugar mills in Taitung that not only feature historic factory buildings and equipment, but also now host installation art, shops, and markets. The once old sugar mill areas have been reborn as cultural and artistic hubs, showcasing new life.

1. Taitung Sugar Mill

The rise and fall of Taitung Sugar Mill bear witness to the history of Taitung’s development. From a sugar refinery during the Japanese colonial period to today’s Taitung Sugar Mill and pineapple factory, it was shut down in 1996 due to environmental changes. In 2004, it was redeveloped into the Dongtang Original Factory, featuring numerous landscape public art installations and inviting various craft workshops to set up shop. It has become one of the key hubs for Taitung’s cultural and creative development.

In addition to many distinctive workshops, the surrounding area also features creative landscape iron sculptures that blend local art and cultural characteristics. The original air raid shelters have also been preserved and restored. Currently, Taitung Sugar Mill is one of the stops along the Taitung Mountain-Sea Railway Bike Trail, making it a unique attraction rich in both history and culture.
