National Museum of Prehistory, Taiwan

The National Museum of Prehistory, Taiwan, can be divided into the Main Museum and the Beinan Cultural Park. The Main Museum is located south of Kang Le Railway Station in Taitung City, covering an area of approximately 10 hectares, while the Beinan Cultural Park is situated on both sides of the new Taitung Railway Station, spanning about 18 hectares.

The museum's establishment was prompted by the discovery of a large number of stone coffin burial clusters within the Beinan Site during the construction of the new Taitung Railway Station and marshalling yard along the South-Link Railway in the 36th year of the Republic of China. The Beinan Site is the most complete prehistoric settlement site discovered in Taiwan’s archaeological history and is also the largest stone-slab coffin burial site in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim. To protect this precious site, the National Museum of Prehistory, Taiwan, was planned and built. However, to minimize the impact of construction on the site, the Beinan Site area was designated as the Beinan Cultural Park, and the Main Museum was constructed south of Kang Le Railway Station on the South-Link Railway. This laid a sustainable foundation for the preservation and research of Taiwan’s prehistoric culture.

The National Museum of Prehistory, Taiwan, is one of the most beautifully landscaped and locally distinctive museums in Taiwan. Its first-phase exhibitions introduce visitors to Taiwan’s natural history, prehistory, and the culture and development of Taiwan’s Austronesian indigenous peoples, showcasing the essence of Taiwan’s prehistoric and indigenous cultures. The Beinan Cultural Park is an on-site excavation and exhibition heritage park, featuring diverse flora and fauna that make the park a naturally restored environment.
