Bashian Cave Ruins

Bashian Cave Ruins is a cultural tourism attraction.

On the rocky cliffs facing the sea in Sanjian Village, Changbin Township, Taitung County, Taiwan, there are dozens of sea-eroded caves, locally known as Bashian Caves. Archaeologist Professor Song Wenxun led the National Taiwan University archaeological team in five excavations, not only discovering cultural layers from the Neolithic Age but also finding a rich pre-pottery Paleolithic culture at the lowest layers of the cave deposits. These ruins are the oldest prehistoric cultural site in Taiwan and have been designated as a national first-class historic monument by Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior.

According to geologists, the terrain of Bashian Cave Ruins was formed by crustal uplift followed by erosion from seawater, resulting in a series of caves of varying sizes—such as Lingyan, Chaoyin, Yong’an, Ganyuan, and Hailéi—arranged from top to bottom. Currently, well-maintained pathways lead to each cave, and the relevant authorities have set up a “Prehistoric Cultural Site” exhibition room here, featuring displays and detailed explanations
