Sicheongxi Hot Springs

Sicheongxi Hot Springs is located northeast of Checheng Township in Hengchun Peninsula, Pingtung County, Taiwan. It can be reached by traveling about 32 kilometers eastward along County Highway 199 from Checheng. Discovered during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, these are sedimentary rock hot springs. With natural hot spring water gushing from underground, they were historically called "Chutang" (meaning "emerging hot water"). Moreover, this area is a basin surrounded by mountains with rivers cutting through it. In earlier times, residents had to wade across rivers and walk along four winding river routes to enter or leave the region, which led to its common name "Sicheongxi" (literally "Four-Layer River").

The waters of Sicheongxi Hot Springs are clear, clean, and of high quality, suitable for both drinking and bathing. They are alkaline carbonated springs. The water temperature is higher around March and April, and lower during summer and autumn. The springs contain a variety of minerals and are highly effective in promoting blood circulation and relieving muscle stiffness. Legend has it that during the Japanese colonial period, the hot springs gained fame after Prince Takamatsu (the younger brother of Emperor Showa) and his wife visited for their honeymoon. Alongside Beitou Hot Springs, Caoshan Hot Springs (Yangmingshan Hot Springs), and Guanziling Hot Springs, Sicheongxi became one of the four most renowned hot springs in Taiwan during that era.
